She started a band called Stefani Germanotta Band (SGBand) with some friends from New York University. They played at several bars such as the Greenwich Village and Mercury Lounge on Lower East Side.

"Once you learn how to think about art, you can teach yourself," Gaga says. She dropped out of CAP21 at the age of 19 to focus on her musical career.

She later applied for the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), a musical theater training conservatory at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She lived in the New York University's dormitory till the age of 17.

She loved boys but music was her priority. She once told a newspaper, "My music is my husband."

She was studious, dedicated and a disciplined student in her school. But considered herself a misfit. She once said, "I used to get made fun of for being either too provocative or too eccentric, so I started to tone it down. I didn't fit in, and I felt like a freak."

She bagged many lead roles in high school productions owing to her love for musical theater. She also played a very small in a television series called, The Sopranos.

Stefani began playing the piano at the age of 4, went on to write her first piano ballad at 13 and started performing at open mike nights by the age of 14.

She is a descendant of Italian roots and was raised as a staunch catholic. She belonged to a modest family where hard work was an inescapable part of her parents' life.
